Excerpt from chp 65 of "Among the Ashes"Where are we going? Roy panted as he followed Nils up a narrow, winding staircase.
Nils didnt answer, only quickened his pace, climbing to the top of the tower.
Hey! Roy grabbed his uncles shoulder and turned him around forcibly. Nils, he said breathlessly, his frustration melting into open fear. Whats going on? And why
. He looked down at the blaring red scar on his hand. It still tingled uncomfortably, just below the skin.
Roy looked up, his throat bobbing. Where is she?
Nils eyes flickered to Roys hand, then back up. Just follow me.
Before Roy could protest, Nils turned again, taking the steps two at a time.
Roy sighed and rolled his eyes. You know youre a dragon? he called up the stairwell after his uncle. Why are we walking up stairs?
His voice echoed up the tight, tiny tower and he pulled a face. And why is this tower so freakin small? he shouted, stopping once more, panting with hot breath.
Roy! Nils turned with a snap of his neck. Up.
He turned, winding up the last leg of the stairwell. Roy let out his breath, tipping his head back, and followed.
What? Roy asked as he crossed the landing, then stopped.
He stepped up slowly into the small, circular room lined with windows. Sunlight streamed through the glass-covered walls, shining off of the surface of the pale gold granite floor. The room stood empty but for a single white pillar in the center of the floor with an ancient, cracked stone basin sitting at the top.
What is this place? Roy asked, a quiet sort of reverence entering his voice.
This, Nils said, unhooking his cloak with a quick motion of his hands, is where I come to think.
To think? Roy glanced around again at the tiny room. There was nothing here no poufs to sit on, no books, no open archways, nothing that he associated with Nils and thinking.
Yes, his uncle replied, dropping the cloak hastily. We climbed the stairs because that is the only way to get into this room. The tower is small because it only admits a Manakete in human form. And we are here, he moved directly to the stone basin in the center of the room, because I need to show you something.
Show me something? Roy approached the pillar warily. What? Like, something youve seen? he asked, glancing down at the silvery surface of the basin. The contents shimmered with a metallic gleam, like liquid silver. He reached out a hand curiously, and Nils caught him by the wrist.
Dont touch it, Nils said firmly.
Sorry. Roy looked down, dropping his hand. But, whats all this got to do with anything? he asked, his frustration rising again. Lilina just showed up here with Vale - Vale, Nils! You know who that is?
Nils looked at him dubiously. Probably better than you do.
Roy rolled his eyes. All right, fine! So you know hes the guy that were running from! Hes the reason we left Aritia in the first place. Hes a nutcase! Evil! He killed Zeldas father and took over her country and hes after the Emblem!
Yes, I know, Nils said evenly.
But hes after them! Roy exclaimed, practically tearing at his hair. Lilina just walked right out of here after him. Shes going to join up with him, and she already hates us! Shes going to take him to them! Shes going to kill Eli- His voice cut off. Ive got to go after them!
Roy turned on his heel but Nils caught him and slammed him against the wall.
Roy, will you stop and listen to me? Nils shouted, his fists freezing the fabric of Roys tunic. I know, he insisted. I know far better than you the dangerous situation Lilina has put us in. Thats why were here. Thats why I need to show you
I dont care what youve seen! Roy pushed out of Nils grasp. Im going to stop it!
Its not about whats going to happen! Nils called after his nephew. Its about whats already happened!
Roy stopped at the top of the stairs, and turned back, his eyes narrowed. Whats happened?
Thats what I need to show you, Nils gestured to the basin.
What? Roys eyes widened with panic and he stalked forward. What have they done?
Not them. Nils shook his head heavily, his face falling. Its what I did
a long time ago.
Roys eyes twitched. What you did?
Over a quarter of a century ago, I received a vision, Nils explained quickly. A vision
unlike anything Id ever had before. Most of them come in pieces, flashes that show glimpses of the future, but this, he paused, this was something different.
Roy ran a hand back through his hair, biting his lip in aggravation. Nils
I found a Key, Roy! he cut back in. A single piece of the puzzle that - depending on its position changes everything.
A key. Roy sighed. Look, I already know about the Key! He held up his hand, indicating his mothers silver ring.
That is not the Key I am referring to.
Roy turned again. I dont have time for
You have time for this, Roy. Nils gripped his arm. Youre not leaving this tower, youre not making another move until you see this.
Roy lifted his eyes to his uncles, meeting a veracious determination he barely recognized there. He held his breath for a moment, considering, but he knew he had no choice.
Fine. He wiped the sweat from his brow and let the tension loose from his muscles. Fine, show me.
Nils nodded, and stepped up to the side of the basin. The fire in his eyes faded as he looked down at the smooth surface of the basin, then back up at his nephew.
I should warn you, Nils said tightly. This isnt going to be easy for you to see.
Nils! Roy cried in exasperation. Please!
Nils jaw clenched and he stared at Roy for a long moment before he sighed. Very well.
He extended a single finger, touching the silvery liquid surface of the basin. His touch created a ripple that waved across the surface, churning the thick, silver substance until it solidified like glass.
Look, Nils instructed quietly, taking a step back.
Roy hesitated, watching Nils face as he slowly took a step forward, then cast his eyes on the now clear surface of the basin. He gripped his hands on the side of the pillar, and leaned over, watching as hazy blobs of color beneath the surface of the glass unfolded a scene before his eyes.
